Fonatur Invites Bids for Sustainable Transportation Systems in Acapulco

The National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur) has issued a call to four consulting firms – Transconsult, Felipe Ocho and Associates, Consulting and Engineering Analysis, and Cal y Mayor and Associates – to participate in a bidding process to select the firm that will conduct a supply-demand study for implementing new sustainable public transportation services in Acapulco, Guerrero.

The aim of this initiative, in collaboration with the Secretariat of Tourism and the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, is to provide a safe and efficient transport option for Acapulco residents, connecting them to work, study, or leisure destinations, and directly linking with the integral mobility system and tourist sites.

The chosen firm will commence work on April 7 and complete it by August 6, 2023. This new transportation route will connect traditional Acapulco to neighborhoods such as Paso Limónero, Emiliano Zapata, and Renacimiento, enhancing mobility for residents in vulnerable areas and promoting tourism activities.

Key tasks include conducting a user survey on existing transport services, covering aspects like trip purpose, frequency, mode, cost, travel time, including significant tourist zones. The firm will also propose the most suitable transport mode, fleet, routes, schedules, transfer points, and identify potential risks to service users.

Maribús and Cable Car

As part of the federal recovery program for Acapulco, projects such as Maribús and cable car are being considered. The Maribús could operate from Puerto Marqués to Caleta, while the cable car would link with high areas of neighboring municipalities.

Federal Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez recently announced on her X account:

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the Maribús will be ready this year as part of Acapulco’s recovery investment. In its first phase, operated by the Navy Secretariat, it will feature strategic stops to enhance coastal mobility. Local employment and sustainable tourism will also be boosted through potential hiring of local boaters.

These sustainable public transportation systems in Acapulco are intended not only as a tourist attraction but also to draw more visitors, benefiting local communities. Fonatur is responsible for funding the necessary studies for this purpose.
