Auna’s Integrated Care Model in Monterrey: A New Approach to Healthcare in Mexico

Positive indications are emerging in Mexico’s private healthcare sector, aiming for a different approach to enhance patient access. New hospital care models are being initiated to attract medical professionals and establish protocols ensuring predictable medical outcomes and costs.

Introducing Auna’s Model in Monterrey

Auna, a medical corporation, arrived in Monterrey, Nuevo León, three years ago. They offer medical and preventive services at affordable costs through innovative insurance schemes.

Integrated Cancer Care Initiative

Carlos Aguilar, Auna’s Mexico Director General, shared their integrated oncology care initiative. They launched a specialized cancer insurance in 2024 and recently signed exclusive practice agreements with 9 prestigious oncologists for five years. The plan is to expand this model across specialties and cities, starting with Mexico City.

Auna’s Success in Peru and Colombia

Founded in Peru 30 years ago, Auna leads in cancer insurance with one million policies and over 20,000 active patients. In Colombia, they serve another 20,000 patients without insurance using their protocols, matching survival rates of top global cancer institutions.

Auna’s secret: ‘tumor boards’ consisting of oncologists and specialists who tailor personalized treatment plans based on age, gender, and tumor type. This ensures better patient care and outcomes.

Affordable Cancer Coverage

Aguilar highlights Auna’s value proposition: covering 100% of cancer treatment without deductibles or copays at affordable prices. For instance, a 59-year-old adult might pay around $1,200 to $1,500 monthly for comprehensive coverage.

Auna invests in advanced technology and infrastructure, including the only ciclotrón in Mexico’s north for tumor detection and radiofarmoco therapy application. They also have three linear accelerators for non-invasive treatments, laying groundwork for future research.

Across Peru, Colombia, and Mexico, Auna integrates 31 centers (hospitals, clinics, ambulatory care) with 2,300 beds. In the last year, they served 1.5 million patients across all markets, with 110,000 hospitalizations and 80,000 surgeries.

Future Expansion

Auna plans to grow through partnerships with medical groups in various specialties and hospitals across different cities. They already have affiliated doctors in Mexico City and Guadalajara.
