Washington Likely to Grant Mexico Preferred Trading Partner Status, But Relations Won’t Be the Same

Geopolitical reasons and national security concerns might lead Washington to grant Mexico the preferred trading partner status proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum. However, bilateral relations will not return to their previous state.

The 24-year TLC and eight years of the T-MEC have shaped an advantageous economic model for exporting to the world’s largest economy. This has influenced the political regime change, revitalized the Imperial Presidency, and given the model a rigidly statist hue.

This could be another internal struggle within Morena, explaining whispers of differences between Luisa María Alcalde and Andrés Manuel López Beltrán in the party’s leadership. The cost of hegemony may start to show.

These incidents where communities in various CDMX neighborhoods assault law enforcement and investigators over drug-related arrests might signal a deeper issue. While protests against detentions are becoming common, this isn’t just another incident; it suggests the social fabric is dangerously unraveling in some areas.
