Mexican Officials Visit Washington to Strengthen Bilateral Security Cooperation

Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Public Security and Protection, and Roberto Velasco Álvarez, Head of the Unit for North America at Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are in Washington D.C., USA on a working visit to bolster bilateral security cooperation.

During their stay, the Mexican officials will hold crucial meetings with representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Department of State (DOS), among other entities.

The visit aims to continue recent bilateral conversations, emphasizing cooperation with respect for Mexico’s sovereignty and mutual trust principles, shared responsibility, non-subordination, and respect for Mexico and its citizens, as stated by the Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretariat.

  • Key Points:
  • The duration of their stay in the U.S. and specific meeting dates were not disclosed.
  • Recently, Kash Patel, Director of the FBI, met with García Harfuch following the sending of 29 drug traffickers to the U.S.

Meeting with U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security

This visit came after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met with Kristi Noem, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, on March 28 to discuss migration and border security issues.

“We collaborate, coordinate with the United States for the security of both countries; we never subordinate ourselves, always respecting our sovereignty,” Sheinbaum affirmed.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that during their meeting, they renewed an agreement—initially signed in 2022—for the exchange of customs information at the U.S. official’s request.
