Mark Carney, Canada’s Prime Minister, held a discussion on Tuesday with Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, regarding Canada’s strategy to combat “unjustified trade measures” by former U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Carney’s office.
“In these challenging times, Prime Minister Carney and President Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of safeguarding North America’s competitiveness while respecting each nation’s sovereignty,” stated Carney’s office in a press release Tuesday evening.

Since his return to the White House in January, Trump has announced and postponed the imposition of tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Additionally, he proposed applying reciprocal tariffs to global trade partners on Wednesday.
“Prime Minister Carney also highlighted his plan to counter unjustified trade measures against Canada,” he added.
