Tabasco’s Guardia Nacional Coordinator Resigns

Ignacio Murillo Rodríguez, the coordinator of the Guardia Nacional in Tabasco, has resigned from his position, which he assumed on November 4. Meanwhile, a successor is being appointed.

According to José Ramiro López Obrador, Secretary of Government in Tabasco, Murillo Rodríguez was promoted to command the region encompassing Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Tabasco. A new brigadier general will soon take charge of the Guardia Nacional in Tabasco.

Murillo Rodríguez’s resignation came just 24 hours after José Barajas Mejía also stepped down as head of the Fiscal General de Tabasco on Monday.

Security Crisis

Tabasco is currently facing a security crisis and surge in violence, partly due to the conflict between the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and the local criminal organization known as La Barredora.

In just the first two months of 2025, there were 254 homicides in Tabasco—a 52% increase from the 167 reported in the same period last year.

Official data from the Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública (SESNSP) show that intentional homicides totaled 186 between January and February, marking a 132.5% increase compared to the 80 reported in the same period of 2024.

The latest Urban Security Survey (ENSU) by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicates that Villahermosa, Tabasco’s capital, has the highest perceived insecurity level in Mexico.
