Adults’ Pension to Absorb 5.4% of Public Spending Next Year: Over 500,000 Million Pesos Allocated

Universal Pension for the Elderly will remain the program with the highest budget allocation in 2025 and 2026. Next year, it will represent 5.4% of the total net public spending.

According to the 2026 Pre-Budget (Pre Criterios) released on Tuesday by the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit, the program’s budget for next year will be 502,916 million pesos (mdp).

This means that out of the total projected net public spending of 9.3 trillion pesos for 2026, 5.4% will be allocated to the Universal Pension.

In 2025, it will receive 483,438 mdp, equivalent to 5.2% of the total net public spending, according to the 2026 Pre-Budget.

Thus, this year and next, the Universal Pension will be the program with the highest budgetary impact among the 112 prioritized by President Sheinbaum’s government.

The government provides the Universal Pension for the Elderly to all individuals aged 65 and over, a monthly support of 6,200 pesos in 2025.

Additionally, upon taking office, President Sheinbaum introduced the Bienestar Pension for Women aged 60 to 64, providing an equivalent support to half of the Universal Pension (3,100 pesos) for women in this age range.

For 2025, 15,000 mdp were approved for the Bienestar Pension for Women. The government estimates that for 2026, spending on this new pension will reach 15,605 mdp, a 4% increase.

It is expected that spending on this program will increase in the following years as it is gradually implemented.

In 2025, only women aged 63 and 64 will receive the Bienestar Pension for Women. In municipalities with majority indigenous or Afro-Mexican populations, all women aged 60 to 64 will receive this new pension starting this year.

For 2026, the nearly 30% of the total 1.8 trillion pesos allocated for the government’s 112 priority programs will go to the Universal Pension and the Bienestar Pension for Women.
