With the upcoming start of Semana Santa vacations, the Mexican Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has issued a warning regarding six beaches that exceed safe levels of recreational use.
Playa de Rosarito, Playa de Rosarito I (Rosarito), Playa Tijuana, Playa Tijuana 1 (Tijuana) (Baja California) and Playa Icacos (Acapulco) (Guerrero), as well as Playa Sayulita (Bahía de Banderas) (Nayarit), are the beaches affected.
Beach Safety Statistics
Despite this, Cofepris reported that 98% of Mexico’s 289 analyzed beaches meet safety standards for recreational use. This information comes from a study conducted in collaboration with state Sanitary Risk Protection Areas (APCRS) and the National Network of State Public Health Laboratory (RNLESP).
Playa Oasis in Puerto Vallarta Now Safe
Notably, Playa Oasis in Puerto Vallarta, previously flagged as unsafe in December 2024, has now passed the test and is suitable for recreational activities.
Cofepris’ rigorous analysis, part of the ‘Clean Beaches 2025’ program, included 2,337 seawater samples from 393 monitoring points. Any beach with results above 200 NMP (Most Probable Number) of Enterococcus Faecalis per 100ml is deemed unsuitable for recreational use, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
