The Brazilian telecommunications regulator, Anatel, has given SpaceX the green light to add 7,500 new Starlink satellites for operation in the country. This decision more than doubles the current 4,408 Starlink satellites permitted by Anatel.
Details of the Approval
- Increased Satellite Allowance: Anatel has significantly expanded the number of Starlink satellites allowed to operate in Brazil, from 4,408 to 7,500.
- Frequency Band Expansion: The approval includes an expansion of frequency bands for these satellites.
- Authorization Duration: Anatel decided to maintain the expiration date of SpaceX’s authorizations until 2027.
Despite the authorization, Anatel members have indicated the need to update Brazil’s current regulatory framework. They highlighted concerns regarding market dominance, space sustainability, and digital sovereignty.
SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this approval.
