Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 Index fell by 3.02% to 25,997.56 points in early trading on Monday, ahead of new tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump announced the implementation from Wednesday of “reciprocal” tariffs against allied and rival countries, as well as specific sectors such as automotive, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors.
- The announcement affected not only Tokyo but also other markets: Seoul’s KOSPI index dropped by 2.5%, Taipei fell by 1.6%, and Sydney declined by 1.4%.
- Japan, home to the world’s largest vehicle manufacturer Toyota, is particularly vulnerable. The automotive industry is among the sectors most impacted by U.S. tariffs on steel and semiconductors.
Toyota shares were down 3.72%, Honda fell by 3.65%, and Nissan dropped by 4.26% in early trading on Monday.
