Senators’ Justice Commission Approves Election for Local Electoral Magistrates

The Senators’ Justice Commission has approved the eligibility of 996 candidates for 56 vacant positions as local electoral judges in 30 out of 32 Mexican states. This decision, made with PAN abstaining, will be submitted to a vote by the Senate Plenum on Tuesday.

Process Details

According to the eleventh clause of the corresponding call, the Junta de Coordinación Política (JCP)—the highest decision-making body in the Senate composed of representatives from six parliamentary groups—will “propose” names for these positions. The Commission confirmed that none of the candidates are disqualified based on eligibility criteria.

Concerns Raised

Guadalupe Murguía (PAN) expressed dissatisfaction as there was no evaluation for determining the suitability and eligibility after candidate hearings. She argued that the JCP, not the Commission, should decide on the candidates’ profiles.

Javier Corral (Morena), commission president, responded by explaining that the procedure for selecting local electoral judges is established in the call, and the Commission’s role was limited to reviewing eligibility requirements. The JCP will ultimately decide on the suitable candidates.
