Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, reaffirmed her support for Ecuadorian presidential candidate Luisa González as the country heads toward a tight runoff election on Sunday.
González, who aims to become Ecuador’s first elected female president, will face current President Daniel Noboa. Their contest is anticipated to be close, following Noboa’s controversial order to storm Mexico’s embassy in Quito last April, which led to the severance of diplomatic ties.
Background on González
- Figure: 47-year-old lawyer and chosen candidate of former leftist President Rafael Correa (2007-2017).
- Support: Endorsed by Ecuador’s indigenous communities, a key bloc.
Ya lo dije yo hace poco, me van a criticar por decirlo, pero es tiempo de mujeres en México y en Ecuador también.

“It’s time for women in Mexico and Ecuador,” Sheinbaum declared at her routine press conference, responding to queries about the ongoing legal dispute with Quito.
In February, Sheinbaum publicly backed González following a narrow first-round vote. She expressed hope for González’s victory to help mend strained bilateral relations.
Diplomatic Strain
The rift began after Noboa ordered a police raid on Mexico’s embassy to apprehend Jorge Glas, Correa’s former vice president, accused of corruption. The action was widely condemned and prompted Ecuador to file a case at the International Court of Justice.
At the core of the conflict is Glas, whose asylum in Mexico is not recognized by Ecuador.
