Rosario Castellanos, the renowned Chiapas-born writer, journalist, and diplomat, will be honored in a special centennial celebration during the 2025 Fiesta del Libro y la Rosa. The event, organized by UNAM’s Coordination of Cultural Diffusion, is scheduled from April 25 to 27 at the Center for Cultural University Activities and other UNAM venues.
Highlighted Speakers
The festival will feature prominent authors such as Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, Jordi Soler, Naief Yehya, Antonio Ortuño, Guillermo Arriaga, Shadi Rohana (an Arabic-to-Spanish translator), astronomer Julieta Fierro, and archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma.
Extensive Program
The three-day event includes 398 activities, featuring 125 exhibitors and offering 635 publishing houses. It will also host two tributes dedicated to writers Hernán Lara Zavala and Julio Trujillo under the theme “Exilio, memorias y reencuentros” (Exile, Memories and Reunions).
Rosario Castellanos Exhibition
At the Colegio de San Ildefonso, starting April 23—World Book and Copyright Day—the exhibition “Un cielo sin fronteras. Rosario Castellanos: archivo inédito” (An Uncharted Sky. Rosario Castellanos: Unseen Archive) will open.
According to Rosa Beltrán, the head of UNAM’s Cultural Department, “Rosario Castellanos, alongside Sor Juana, left a significant mark in literary work, written from a woman’s body.”
Gabriel Guerra, Castellanos’ son, will share her personal archive, showcasing items like her typewriter, glasses, diaries, manuscripts, and first editions. The collection also includes family photos spanning childhood, youth, and adulthood.
Notable Highlights
A noteworthy aspect of the exhibition is the connection between many displayed items and Castellanos’ texts. Key events include a dramatic reading of “Cartas a Ricardo” (Letters to Ricardo) on April 25, at 5 PM in the Liberty Forum, and a presentation of “La rueda del hambriento y otros relatos” (The Wheel of Hunger and Other Tales) by writers Diana del Ángel, Socorro Venegas, and Andrea Fuentes Silva on April 27, in the Utopia Forum.
