Chilean President Gabriel Boric has criticized his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, for attempting to act as a “new emperor” through his trade tariff policies.
Boric made these remarks while on an official visit to India, where he aims to establish commercial agreements. He highlighted that such trips gain more significance amid unilateral tariff impositions by certain countries, disregarding mutually agreed rules and principles of international trade.
Concerns over Trump’s Tariffs
Boric expressed concern over the anticipated tariffs that Trump is expected to announce tonight. He stated, “No one knows what conditions these might impose on certain countries.”
Trump has dubbed this day as ‘Freedom Day’ and threatens to impose taxes on several nations.
Criticism of Trump’s Actions
Boric openly criticized Trump, noting that during his inauguration as U.S. President, Trump was surrounded by “great multimillionaires” from around the world, participating in a “courtly behavior reminiscent of ancient times,” suggesting he aims to be a new emperor.
Since his return to the White House, Trump has announced increases in trade tariffs, particularly on commercial imports from neighboring countries like Mexico and Canada, as well as certain products from the European Union. Tonight’s expected decree includes these taxes and possible new ones.
