President Daniel Noboa Announces Border Restriction to Ensure Electoral Security
Ecuador’s President, Daniel Noboa, has announced a temporary closure of the country’s borders starting from 16:00 (21:00 GMT) on Friday, April 11th, until 23:59 (04:00 GMT) on Monday, April 14th.
This “special temporary regulation” restricts the entry of foreigners into the nation’s security zones on the northern and southern borders. The decision aims to safeguard public well-being and national sovereignty during the upcoming presidential election, scheduled for Sunday, April 13th.
- Military Deployment: Enhanced military presence will be maintained at key coastal ports (Guayaquil, Puerto Bolívar, Manta, and Esmeraldas) and other fishing areas to ensure the smooth operation of these strategic sectors.
- Election Security: The government emphasizes its commitment to a violence-free environment for voters, preventing any coercive actions that might disrupt the democratic election process or threaten Ecuador’s sovereignty.
This border closure comes just two days before the second round of presidential elections. Noboa is vying for a second term, while left-leaning candidate Luisa González aims to bring the left back into power. Polls indicate a close race between the two candidates, with undecided voters and supporters of other parties potentially influencing the outcome.
