The Ecuadorian authorities have announced a temporary closure of the country’s borders as part of security measures for the upcoming presidential election on April 13, 2025.
President Daniel Noboa declared this measure, which will restrict foreign entry from 4:00 PM (local time) on Friday, April 11, until 11:59 PM on Monday, April 14, in the northern and southern border zones.
- Border Control Measures: An enhanced operational, tactical, and military presence by the Armed Forces will be implemented, focusing on key coastal ports including Guayaquil, Puerto Bolívar, Manta, and Esmeraldas.
- Purpose: To ensure a peaceful environment for citizens and safeguard the country’s sovereignty during the electoral process.
The additional military deployment will focus on securing strategic coastal areas and fishing points to maintain normal operations. The government aims to prevent any violent acts that could disrupt the democratic election or threaten Ecuador’s sovereignty.
This announcement comes just two days before the second round of presidential elections, where Noboa is seeking a second term and leftist candidate Luisa Gonzalez aims to reclaim power for the left. Polls indicate a close race between the two contenders, with undecided voters potentially swinging the outcome.
